Condensation & Air Quality

It is a recommendation of the NZ building code that all the air in your home is replaced every 3 hours. This would stop the build-up of moisture and pollutants, eliminating condensation, mould and mildew and provide a fresh and healthy home environment. To achieve this without losing the homes heat is the challenge.

A balanced ventilation system is the only way to achieve this recommendation while retaining the majority of the home’s heat. Balanced ventilation uses an incoming air fan and an outgoing air fan with a heat exchanger in the middle to retain the heat. Smart-Vent Synergy and Intelivent are the recommended systems available from The Heating Company.

A cheaper alternative to balanced ventilation is positive pressure ventilation. This system will provide the incoming fresh air the home needs but can reduce the homes temperature when the outdoor/roof air temperature is below that of the home. This cooling effect can be offset with additional home heating or a pre-heat element but it is important to use a low wattage pre-heat element to avoid excessive electricity consumption. Smart-Vent Positive Pressure and Dry-Matic by Smooth-air are the “My Home” recommended systems available from The Heating Company.
